Reason for seeking, qualifications for, goals if elected, etc. etc.:
I believe that government/elected officials are employees of the tax payers, and as such have an obligation to be fiscally responsible, and accountable, to their constituents. I believe that government should operate within a reasonable budget just as their constituents do. To that end, I do not support the proposal for town funding of "affordable housing" in our community at this time. In my opinion this is akin to putting the proverbial cart before the horse. Rather, our community would be better served if we use our resources to enhance business growth and address senior needs such as senior housing.
I believe that in many ways our community has become stagnant. We need to explore options for growth that will lead to additional employment opportunities. Our location within the park will limit those options. However, this also provides us with an advantage. Our community already has a thriving summer tourism business. We should be actively promoting our community for all seasons, ie fall foliage and winter activities, to expand tourism during those seasons. We should also be exploring all other options to entice new businesses to come to Long Lake and Raquette Lake such as internet based businesses that can be done from home. I realize that due to the current economic climate as well as other factors beyond our control, growth and/or expansion may be difficult if not impossible to achieve. We should, none the less, seek to entice business growth. If elected I’ll work with the board, local businesses and other interested individuals to identify both short and long term goals/objectives for development and growth, and to develop a plan to achieve those goals.
I am concerned for the senior citizens in our community. As supervisor I would seek our senior’s opinions to address issues confronting them. As a starting point, I would seek senior volunteers, as well as other interested citizens, to serve on a committee with either myself or other board members to identify issues affecting our seniors and formulate proposals to address those issues. If elected I would establish such a committee, and I would actively pursue senior housing for our community.
I believe government should be open and transparent with full public disclosure to the extent allowed by law. If elected I will implement a monthly report to the residents of Long Lake and Raquette Lake as was done by past supervisors.
I believe one of the town supervisor’s primary duties is to supervise. I recognize the need for the supervisor to attend certain meetings and other functions at the county and state level. If elected I would use discretion in choosing which of these meetings I attend to allow me to maximize my time as a full time supervisor.
Married to Gail Schlett Seaman. 4 children and 11 grandchildren.
